Since the
beginning of time, people have eaten meat. Many vegetarians, however, believe
this is we should eliminate meat from our diets. By doing so, we are not only
harming ourselves, the consumer, we are harming others as well.
Vegetarians
hurt the livelihood of farmers. Many farmers rely on raising livestock such as
chickens, pigs, and cattle to earn a living. If more people become vegetarians,
it would be extremely difficult for these farmers to switch to growing fruits
and vegetables. Fruit and vegetable crops also need more land to grow. Farmers
will be forced to spend money to buy more land. Also they will need to hire
more workers to harvest the crops. Farmers who raise animals will be hurt
financially.
The lives of
doctors will be much harder as well. Vegetarian patients will require attention
to their special needs because their unique diets. Doctors must also educate
themselves on the special needs of vegetarians. Also, because vegetarians may
not eat a full, balanced diet that includes meat, doctors must keep a watchful
on their diets so that they consume the proteins and other nutrients that they
need. Supervising patient's diet makes it harder for doctor's to care for more
serious diseases.
What if you
were to become a vegetarian? For ordinary consumers, it is not a sensible
choice. People are naturally omnivores so eliminating meat is unnatural. You
will be deprived of nutrients that come from animals. These include proteins,
oils, and amino acids, which help to keep bodies strong. Your diet will be
unbalanced. Also, you may believe that you are helping animals by not eating
meat. However, if no one ate meat, livestock animals such as chickens and cows
would not survive in the wild. They would quickly go extinct.
Vegetarians may
claim that animals should not be eaten. They may claim they are healthier. The
truth is that by becoming a vegetarian, you are not only harming your body, you
are making the lives of farmers and doctors more difficult as well.
