Like many other countries around the world,
Korea requires its men in their early twenties to perform the important duty of
defending their country through performing mandatory service in the military. This
service enhances not only the nation but also the lives of those men in many
ways. This is why military service should be a requirement for all of a nation’s
young men.
One benefit of military service for men is
that it instills discipline. It is rigorous and demanding. Rising at dawn and
engaging in demanding drills ingrains diligence and a strong work ethic. Young
men learn the value of teamwork as one member in an infantry. They learn to
never surrender and to persevere in the face of obstacles. All of these lessons
will carry them far in their future endeavors.
Serving in the military also prepares young
men to work in a team environment. The officers in the military will treat them
in the same manner as their future managers. Many Korean companies have
corporate structures similar to the military. Both have rigid hierarchies. Successful
workers must learn to adapt to this type of work culture. By serving in the
military, young men learn the skills to adjust to corporate life. This will improve
their chances for financial success.
Finally, we must not forget about the true
purpose of military service in Korea. Even though the Korean War has ended,
North Korea and South Korea are still technically at war. To this day, North Korea
remains a hostile country towards the South, and the risk of an invasion by
North Korea still remains. It is therefore crucial that South Korea keeps
soldiers at the ready should another war break out.
While war is never an event we should hope
for, we must always be ready. Maintaining a compulsory military service for young
men keeps Korea safe. It also provides the young men a solid foundation for
life.
