The Internet
has changed the world in a fundamental way. This cannot be denied. Not all
changes are always positive, however. In the case of the Internet, the changes
that it has brought have caused many unfortunate effects on the way we live our
lives.
One very
unfortunate effect of the Internet is that we are becoming less social. The
downside of the convenience the Internet is that people are meeting less
frequently. Face-to-face conversations have been replaced by e-mails and online
chatting. We are losing the ability to make and maintain friendships. Even the
ability to use languages is dwindling as we forget to spell words and use
grammar properly. As we use the Internet to interact, we are increasingly
isolating ourselves from others.
The Internet is
also eroding our privacy. Many websites on the Internet require users to enter
personal information. Private information such as our home address, telephone
number, weight, height, even if we have a boyfriend or girlfriend is all
online. This can be embarrassing or even dangerous. This information is easy to
retrieve simply by searching on sites like Google or Naver. Although many
websites assure privacy, it is far from guaranteed. Our personal lives are
being shared for anyone to see.
Because of our
loss of privacy and many other reasons, people are becoming less safe due to
the Internet. It is far too easy to steal bank information or credit card
numbers and steal money. People with criminal intent can find like-minded
people to organize crimes and scams. They can even find instructions online to
create bombs. For minors, the Internet gives them free access to material that
is unsuitable or inappropriate for their age. They may even unknowingly chat
with criminals.
The Internet
has brought many significant changes to our world. For all the benefits the
Internet provides, we must always keep in mind that these benefits come at a
heavy cost.
