The duty of a
school is to teach students in a wide range of subjects so they are prepared
for their future. This is especially true in middle school and high school. During
this important time, students should be taught a comprehensive curriculum. They
should not partake in specialized classes.
Specialized
subjects are not beneficial to students in middle and high school because they
are too young. At that age, students are just beginning on their academic
journey. They are not experienced or knowledgeable enough to know what subjects
they wish to pursue. Specialized subjects should be taught only after students
have mastered the basics. At a time when students should be focused on basic
education, they should not be thrust into learning higher level, specialized
topics.
It is more
important for students in middle and high school to be well-rounded. This
includes knowledge of all the core subjects such as art, history, geography,
and literature. These subjects must not be neglected. Only by learning a wide
range of subjects can students gain insight and true understanding. This helps
not only in academics but also in life. Students will have plenty of time to
delve deeper into areas of interest in university.
In fact,
students may later change their minds about what they are interested in when
they enter university. That is why teaching specialized subjects is a waste of
time and resources in middle and high school. This time should used to the
fullest to lay the foundation of learning. Trying to teach deeply about one
subject will only take away from time that could be spent on more important
classes.
Especially
during middle school and high school, the goal of students should be to prepare
themselves for the future. This can only be achieved through learning all they
can in a diverse array of subjects, not concentrating on a specialized few.
Specialized subjects should not be offered to them.
