The Internet has been a positive force - Pro - LEXILE: 890L

The Internet has become a ubiquitous part of our lives, our society, and our culture. Today, we rely more than ever on the power of the Internet to enhance our lives, and for good reason. The Internet has transformed and enriched our lives in many important areas.

One profound change in our lives is in the way we communicate. Before the Internet, communication was time consuming and expensive. Letters sent by mail took days to arrive. With the Internet, we can e-mail one another instantly. We can send not only text, but also share photos, audio and even video files. Making expensive trips to meet people has also become obsolete. Video conferencing enables people to speak to one another as if they were in the same room together.

Along with communication, the Internet has unlocked a wealth of information. Information and ideas that were once hidden away have now become easily accessible. Instead of trekking to the local library spending frustrating hours finding a book, we can instantly research a topic with a click of a mouse button. We can read and listen to interviews of the leading minds of the world to expand our knowledge on diverse subjects. The Internet also enables information to move at the speed of light. Breaking news can be updated and spread across the world as it happens. Without the Internet, none of this would be possible.

There are skeptics who claim that the Internet has impaired our ability to maintain relationships.
However, nothing could be further from the truth. If anything, the Internet has helped to build and foster our closest relationships. Social networking sites help people stay in touch with loved ones.
We can use blogging sites to keep a journal so that others can stay up to date with our daily lives.
The Internet can help us to make new relationships as well. We can make friends with common interests through special interest sites. We can even find new careers and business opportunities through the connections we make on the Internet.

Where would people be without the Internet? The Internet has given people new ways to communicate, learn, and socialize. It truly has the world a much better place to live in.
