Freedom of speech should never be restricted - Pro

A fundamental right for citizens in a free democracy is the freedom of speech. This basic right guarantees that people can voice their opinions and thoughts without fear of punishment. Freedom of speech is such a critical right in so many ways it must never be restricted by the government.

Freedom of speech should never be restricted because it is a crucial and necessary part of a democracy. The ability of the people to criticize the government keeps the government's power in check. This ensures that elected officials cannot abuse their powers. Without freedom of speech for all citizens, a free, democratic nation could easily turn into a dictatorship. The Founding Fathers of the United States believed in this right so deeply, they made it the first right in the U.S. Constitution.

Similarly, unrestricted freedom of speech is necessary to expose corruption and dishonesty among a country's people. Often, it is the rich and powerful who have committed illegal acts. They have the influence to suppress the truth about their misdeeds and to punish those who expose their corruption. For this reason, common citizens must have the absolute right to speak out about these crimes. Freedom of speech protects the ordinary people so that the truth can be revealed. If the government began to limit this right, it would be too easy for the rich and powerful to bribe or pressure politicians to silence the truth.

In the end, government should never be able to restrict freedom of speech because the decision is too arbitrary. Who should be the ultimate decision maker on what can or cannot be said? Imagine that a law was passed that banned prayer at the church you attended because it is not the 'right' religion. Is this law fair? Imagine if all men voted to take away freedom of speech from all women. Is this fair? Just because speech is unpopular does not mean it should be banned. The best solution to prevent this problem is to not restrict people's right to free speech at all.

The government of a nation is elected by its people. In a free democracy, one person should never be more powerful than another. Freedom of speech guarantees that everyone, however poor or weak, is free to express his or views. It is a right that should never be restricted.
